So, youβve decided on Invisalign. Great choice! Itβs one of the best teeth straightening options out there. The treatment is way less hassle than metal braces, and Invisalign clear aligners are pretty much invisible. Either way, you probably want that new, straight smile as soon as possible.
Everyoneβs Invisalign process is different. Some people zip through it. Others can take a bit longer. But there are a few smart moves that can help you stay on track (and maybe even shave a bit off your treatment time).
At Pennant Hills Dental Centre, weβve helped many patients, both young and old, straighten their teeth. We know all the ways to keep your smile journey going as smoothly and quickly as possible. Hereβs what we tell our own Invisalign patients:
1. Wear your aligners for 22 hours a day
This oneβs a biggie. The Invisalign treatment process only works properly if you actually wear the aligners. It sounds obvious, but youβd be surprised how many people slack off. You need them in for at least 22 hours a day. Essentially, theyβre only out when youβre eating, drinking anything but water, or brushing and flossing. The longer theyβre out, the longer your treatment drags on.
Your aligners are designed to move your teeth in small steps, bit by bit. So, they need that constant pressure. Want to breeze through your Invisalign treatment and keep tooth movements more predictable? Stick to this number 1 rule. It’s simple.
2. Use Invisalign chewies to seat your aligners properly
There shouldn’t be gaps between your Invisalign aligners and your teeth. If there are, it means theyβre not sitting tight. This can slow everything down. Grab some chewies (little foam cylinders) and bite down on them for a few minutes a couple of times a day. This can be especially helpful right after putting in a new set of Invisalign trays.
They push the aligners snug against your teeth, get rid of air pockets, and keep your smile journey moving as it should. Theyβre affordable, easy to use, and can make a big difference.
3. Keep your teeth and aligners clean
Dirty teeth or grimy aligners mess with the fit. And bacteria and plaque buildup can slow down how your teeth shift. Even worse, it can put you at risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. Always brush and floss before popping your aligners back in. And give the trays a rinse under cool water or use a special aligner cleaner to keep them fresh.

4. Follow your change schedule exactly
There’s nothing heroic about swapping Invisalign trays early. On the flip side, donβt get lazy and leave them in longer than you should. Your dentist gives you a change schedule for a reason. Itβs planned around how many aligners youβve got, how they gradually straighten your teeth, and how each one needs to fit.
Jumping the gun can overload your teeth and slow things down in the long run. Hanging on too long can make your gums or tooth roots sore. Stick to the plan and youβll avoid delays and the potential of messing up your bite and needing extra trays.
5. Avoid Hot Drinks with Aligners In
Hot drinks can warp your Invisalign trays. Even just warm drinks are risky. Once the plastic bends even slightly, it wonβt fit like it should. Then your teeth wonβt move on track, and you could end up extending your Invisalign treatment. The easy fix is to take your aligners out before any hot drink, rinse your mouth after, then pop them straight back in.
6. Attend all your check-ups
Once you have your aligners, donβt underestimate the importance of your follow-up appointments and just not go. These follow-up appointments are essential and key to keeping the Invisalign process on the right track. It’s how we check your teeth are moving into the right spots and that your aligners are still doing what theyβre meant to. These appointments also give us the opportunity to tweak your custom aligners, order extra sets, or spot niggly issues before they become catastrophes.
Skip these visits and your whole treatment can stall. Showing up is a great way to increase your chances of getting that straight smile quicker.
